Minors a Major problem? Calendar clashes galore

1
The latest Counter-Strike: Global Offensive Major was announced just days ago, and it has already begun to make waves in the scene.
One of the most anticipated announcements next to roster changes is as always who will hold the next Major and where it will be located. Most of the talking points consist of “Du du du” comment spams on Reddit (referencing ELEAGUE’s well-known break music) and finally being able to make plans to travel to Boston in January. However, along with the big event, the dates for the Minors are announced with it and they are causing some issues.

In typical Valve fashion the details of Majors and all that surrounds them are held in secrecy for a long time, I’m unsure if this is on purpose or because they can’t make their minds up on who gets to hold it. With this comes some suspect event scheduling and some surely avoidable clashes. Just over three months separate the reveal from the group stage, in those three months we have teams to qualify for, a qualifier for the Minor which in turn qualifies them for the main qualifier to then qualify for the major. I’m not sure if the word qualify still makes sense to you after that but I’m starting to lose my grasp on it. Arguably the open qualifier isn’t as likely to clash with teams attending top-tier events in this time, but between the closed qualifiers and the main qualifier we also have upwards of 10 international LANs of varying size and relevance.

The issue then is starting to become clear, not all of those events are huge prize pools though, and surely they have planned around them, or at very least the teams knew in advance which they could attend, right? Not quite. The first closed qualifiers are October 15-16 with some open qualifiers being as soon as October 9. Let’s take a look in an easy to follow list form (most relevant clashes counted).

NA/EU Open Qualifiers Oct 13-14 - 1 clash (dignitas forced to step down to attend)
South America Open Quals Oct 14-15 - 1 clash (no SA teams scheduled to attend)
NA/EU Closed Quals - Oct 15 - 1 clash (Space Soldiers forced to leave other event to attend)
CIS/Asia Minor Oct 26-29 - 2 clashes (Team Spirit drop from EPICENTER quals to attend)
NA/EU Minor Nov 2-5 - 1 clash (EnVyUs and LDLC invited to ESWC, also in closed qual for minor)

This isn’t the longest list of clashes, but it’s too many at such short notice. It’s not just events that can be disrupted, as such short notice also has an effect on personal plans for the players:

Not knowing Valve’s reason for delaying the publication of dates and location it is hard to suggest definitive fixes to this problem. I don’t have a solid knowledge of how early or late a venue must be secured, but with that being said surely there is a better way.

CS:GO saw a significant increase in prize money distributed during the bigger tournaments throughout 2016. But the promising development has taken a toll, with prize money stagnating during 2017, and we might even see a decrease in the total amount of money being paid out from tournaments.

In early 2016, I drew parallels between the record-breaking 2010 Natus Vincere roster and the Brazilian Luminosity team, which is now known as SK Gaming. Today, I am going to compare the 2009 fnatic team – who were knocked off their throne by that same Na`Vi squad mentioned earlier – to the restructured Faze team, featuring the deadly duo of olofmeister and GuardiaN.
