WESA weighs in on multi-team ownership

1
The World Esports Association has released information about new regulations regarding multi-team ownership set in place.
In a post on WESA's official website, the association announced the adoption of new regulatory articles.

The main regulation called the Multi-Team Ownership Prohibition states that "no team is permitted to be completely or partially owned or controlled by a person or entity that owns or controls another esports team or organization participating at WESA sanctioned events. For any team that has a pre-existing multi-team ownership".

This effectively means that no multiple teams that are completely or even partially owned or run by one organization may take part in a WESA sanctioned event [currently only ESL Pro League].

The Executive Board of WESA added that "any team that has a pre-existing multi-team ownership will be granted 18 months to come to compliance."

The newly introduced regulation is widely recognized as WESA's reaction to an issue that has been neglected until very recently when The Esports Observer reported that Virtus.Pro's parent company, ESForce Holding, is a majority shareholder of SK Gaming.

Another entity that is potentially affected is RFRSH Entertainment, a Copenhagen-based esports marketing and media rights company, which has garnered attention for managing Astralis, GODSENT, Heroic, and Norse. WESA's announcement came the same day the Danish organization released a blog post about its business model, in which it states that over a 36 month period, RFRSH may take part ownership of one or more of the teams it works with.

WESA have also unveiled a Personal Code of Conduct, which introduces rules for behavior and conduct within WESA as well as with external parties.

In the last article of the announcement, the association institutes "the Sanctions Regulations", which "install a clear and unambiguous set of rules and methods for leveling sanctions, the permitted scope of any sanctions, as well as a process for appeal."

WESA was founded in May 2016 by eight teams (Fnatic, Natus Vincere, EnVyUS, Virtus.Pro, G2 Esports, Faze Clan, mousesports, Ninjas in Pyjamas) in collaboration with ESL and this is the second act the federation has taken in 2017, the first one being partnering with YouTube for ESL Pro League 2017.

In early 2016, I drew parallels between the record-breaking 2010 Natus Vincere roster and the Brazilian Luminosity team, which is now known as SK Gaming. Today, I am going to compare the 2009 fnatic team – who were knocked off their throne by that same Na`Vi squad mentioned earlier – to the restructured Faze team, featuring the deadly duo of olofmeister and GuardiaN.
