Cloud9 defeats SK Gaming in Subaru Invitational grand finals

1
Featuring the collective North American Counter-Strike: Global Offensive elite, Cloud9 were able to come out on top of the Subaru Invitational, as the squad defeated favorites SK Gaming in the grand finals.
North American fan favorites Cloud9 have secured their second tournament victory of 2017, as the squad took home the Subaru Invitational this past weekend. The team looked on-point throughout the entire playoffs, as Cloud9 didn't drop a single map on their way to claiming the 10,000 USD first prize.

Consisting of eight teams, Cloud9's journey through the Subaru Invitational began with an incredibly convincing victory against NRG Esports. Dropping only twelve rounds in total across the two maps, Cloud9 faced much stiffer competition in the semifinals against Counter Logic Gaming.

The recently resurgent North American line-up, which features Kenneth "koosta" Suen and Ricky "Rickeh" Mulholland, were able to put on a strong performance against Cloud9 on the two maps. Ultimately, Cloud9 persevered, and won both maps of the series, sending them to the grand finals.

An even grand final

Once in the grand finals, Cloud9 were up against their rivals SK Gaming. The Brazilian roster, which recently won the cs_summit, have stayed firmly at the top of North American CS:GO for over a year, which made them the overwhelming favorites in the confrontation.

But despite their recent success, it was Cloud9 who ended up climbing out on top, as SK Gaming were unable to claim either map of the series. While the match was certainly even, Cloud9 were able to shut out the Brazilians on both Cobblestone and Train—giving the North American squad their second tournament victory in five months.

Counter-Strike teams have traditionally been run by the players themselves, with the star players and the in-game leader often having the most say in personnel decisions. The routine stems from the days when a team comprised nothing but five players and perhaps a manager-figure, in charge of seeking sponsorships. As the game has evolved to the point where the top players all make six-figures in guaranteed salary and millions of dollars are paid out annually in prize money, little has changed.
