The game to get the day started saw French side Envyus
taking on the Turkish Space Soldiers
. The initial map was to be Overpass, chosen by Space Soldiers, who must've feared the worst for the series after the French side picked up the victory 16-10 after a strong showing on their T side in the second half.
If there were any worries in the back of their minds the Turkish side didn't let it show as they opened up a 10-5 lead on their opponents map pick of Inferno, and were able to capitalize on this and take the victory 16-9 and take the game to map 3. In what will have to be considered an upset, Space Soldiers continued their momentum and stormed to a 12-3 first half lead on the CT side of Cache. This was simply too much for Envyus to overcome and the Turkish side booked their place in the Upper Bracket Final.
Who they had to face in that final was to be decided in the second match of the day between the European mix team, Optic Gaming
and Polish side AGO Gaming
. It must be said that Optic were considered the strong favorites going into the game and showed their experience by dispatching of the Polish team in very convincing fashion. A 16-2 scoreline on both maps, with Kevin "HS" Tarn
putting in great performances in both games.
This time around there is no rest for the winners, as they then had to face one another in the Upper Bracket Final, with the victorious team taking a place in the EU Minor Grand Final, and more importantly, securing themselves a spot in the Eleague Major Main Qualifier.
The map to get the Upper Bracket final underway is Optic's choice of Overpass, and thanks in part to a strong showing by Emil "Magisk" Reif
who dropped a 30 bomb, they were able to take the victory 16-7. The result of the first map won't have surprised many with the European mixed team being the favorites to win the whole minor.
Moving onto the Turkish side's map of Cache, Optic are just unable to find their feet and a big performance from Buğra "Calyx" Arkın
helps Space Soldiers win the map 16-3 and take game to the third and final map of Mirage. The momentum from this victory has Optic running scared and the Turks manage to build a staggering 11-0 lead. Optic manage to claw some rounds back as the half ends 11-4. Some impressive pistol play from Óscar "mixwell" Cañellas
builds hope that Optic may be able to find themselves a way back into the game. It looked like it wouldn't be possible, until what can only be explained as a issue with monitor resolution, Engin "MAJ3R" Kupeli
not being able to see Adam "friberg" Friberg
stood to his left to lose what should have been his round.
The game is forced into not just one, but two Overtimes in an attempt to separate the two teams, and after a 11-0 opening to the map who would have thought it would be needed? A huge comeback was achieved by Optic, who managed to bounce back, but ultimately it was not enough, as Space Soldiers take the victory and secure their place in the Eleague Major Main Qualifier in a match that was an absolute epic.
Despite the loss, Optic Gaming are not out, they still have a lifeline as they drop into the EU Minor Consolidation Final taking place tomorrow.
