Viewer's guide: Dreamhack Astro Open Denver

1
DreamHack Open Denver is an event that may not be on some of your radars, well that is about to change.
The $100,000 event will feature eight teams featuring at varying degrees in the world ranking, but whilst only one team sits in the top 10, there is still plenty of reason to tune in. With the groups recently announced, the story line so far appears to be sharing of EU and NA teams between each group. Group A features four teams that play in North American leagues, whilst B has three teams from Europe and only one from North America.

This event looked to have a higher than normal chance of a North American team taking the trophy, and whilst it still does, that chance is now slightly diminished as two teams are guaranteed to not make it out of the groups. With that being said, the North Americans still have a solid runner in the form of Cloud9 who showed promising performances at Elegaue Premier recently. Meanwhile BIG will be looking to find their impressive form of the past after having somewhat unfavourable results as of late.

Participating teams

This event has plenty of representation from the North American scene, including a mix of American, South American and Canadian players. This should give some of them a good opportunity to grow against international opponents they may not face as often. Meanwhile the European teams will be feeling slightly outnumbered, but will be looking to cause an upset on foreign soil.

Format and schedule

The format for this event has the initial games of both groups taking place as best of ones, including the winners match for each group. Starting on day two all games will be best of three, including both elimination and decider matches. This setup gives the winners of the group a fast track to the Semi-Finals, including a day off on Saturday, having to win only two maps to secure their spot.

There is plenty of motivation to climb the ladder of this tournament, with the jumps in payout being significant as first place takes half of the overall $100,000 prize pool.
