The Los Angeles-based esports studio Beyond the Summit's inaugural Counter-Strike: Global Offensive event reached its' conclusion yesterday—as SK Gaming took home the grand finals, as well as roughly 63,000 USD.
Given the Brazilian team's rampage through the tournament's upper bracket, SK Gaming were rewarded with an automatic map victory at the beginning of the grand finals. Meaning the team only had to win two maps in order to close out the series. Their opponents in Gambit, meanwhile, were given the tall order of winning three maps against the former Valve Major champions.
But despite being the underdogs, the series looked as if it very well could have gone to a final, deciding game. On opening map Inferno, Gambit were able to overcome SK Gaming by an impressive scoreline of 16-10. SK Gaming answered back quickly on Cache, however, and decimated the predominantly Kazakhstani lineup, winning the map in eighteen rounds.
The final map of the series, Train, at one point looked like it could go either way, as Gambit almost staged a comeback in the map's second half. SK Gaming, however, did not seem eager to let the series continue and finished the series, and the tournament, by winning Train.
