Viewer's Guide: ESL One Cologne 2017

1
This years version of the highly anticipated ESL One Cologne is finally here. This year calls for special circumstances, both with the swiss format aswell as with PGL Krakow Major the following week, making ESL One Cologne somewhat of a rehearsal.
ESL One Cologne wields a strong set of teams. Currently top ranked SK-Gaming is accompanied by other top teams such as G2 Esports and Faze Clan. NiP Gaming, who just recently added Fredrik "REZ" Sterner> in place for Adam "friberg" Friberg, will make their debut with the freshly formed lineup. For those of you who wanted to see Friberg, show no gloom, he is joining Janko "YNk" Paunović and Chad "SPUNJ" Burchill on the analyst desk.

This weeks tournament is the last chance for many teams going to the PGL Krakow Major to finalize the last details and get in to form. With that said, it's expected that ESL One Cologne will contain numerous high level matches with lots of entertaining plays.

How the Swiss format works

The qualifier will be utlizing the so-called Swiss format. Simply put, this means that teams will play between three to five rounds to prove themselves. The teams that gather three victories advance to the major, while each team that acquires three losses are eliminated. Teams will only face opponents with an identical win-loss record.

In the first round, all teams will start off with a 0-0 record, and after the first round, the teams that lost their opening map will be facing off, just like all teams that won their first map will be facing each other as well.

Swiss formatet

Round 1: Each team starts out with 0-0

Round 2: High vs. High (1-0)
Round 2: Low vs. Low (0-1)

Round 3: High vs. High (2-0) — Winner advances
Round 3: Mid vs. Mid (1-1)
Round 3: Low vs. Low (0-2) — Loser is eliminated

Round 4: High vs. High (2-1) — Winner advances
Round 4: Low vs. Low (1-2) — Loser eliminated

Round 5: Alla lag har 2-2 — Winner advances, loser eliminated
