The match to get us underway saw Team Liquid
in a best-of-3 Upper Bracket semi-final, which would see the winner head into the Upper Bracket final, whilst the loser would drop into the Lower Bracket final.
After Misfits struggled to get this far in their game against Luminosity Gaming
yesterday many expected this to be a fairly straightforward affair for Liquid, who were probably the favorites coming into this event. But this is Counter-Strike and the favorites on paper doesn't always mean results. Misfits managed to take the first map of Cobblestone 16-8, before heading onto their map pick of Train. This was a very closely fought game, with both halves ending 8-7 in Liquid's favor, giving them the win and to take the game into the 3rd and final map, Mirage. Misfits were in control for much of the first half on their CT side, which ended 9-6, and despite a strong showing from Russel "Twistzz" Van Dulken
Liquid were unable to mount a comeback and lost the map and the series.
Both teams then had to turn their attention to the next game of the day compLexity Gaming (LoL)
taking on Counter Logic Gaming
, as the winner of the game will go on to the Upper Bracket Final to face Misfits, and the loser will meet Team Liquid in the Lower Bracket Final.
The first map of Cache was picked up by CLG, thanks to a powerful performance from Australian Ricky "Rickeh" Mulholland
. Next up was their opponents map choice of Inferno, Complexity were able to go into the half time with a narrow 8-7 lead, so CLG will have to come from behind if they want to close the series out in just 2 maps. In what was a close second half that is exactly what happened, they managed to take the victory 16-13.
With that Counter Logic Gaming move into the Upper Bracket Final to face Misfits, with the winner securing a place in the Major Main Qualifiers, and Complexity drop down into the Lower Bracket Final where they will have to do battle with Team Liquid, in a fight for their tournament lives.
