Xerm: Will Faze Clan be able to secure their first title of 2018?

Coming up this weekend; Faze Clan continues the hunt for their very first trophy of 2018. Over four months have passed since they secured the ECS Season 4 title, that is despite playing two tournament finals so far this year. Will their participation in the V4 Future Sports Festival see an end to this?

First of all, let's just all agree that 2018 was supposed to be the year of Faze Clan, and the Eleague Major Boston was pretty much a given win for the star-packed team. Well, it hasn't really started out that way now, has it?

Well, it hasn't really started out that way now, has it? <br />  <br />  Losing the Eleague Major Boston final to the Americans of Cloud9 was a hard hit to Faze Clan, who had been the heavy favorites to win the title for several months. A month later, they were hit by another hard blow when failing to secure a spot in the Starladder i-League Starseries Season 4 Grand Final, and then finishing fourth after losing the decider against another North American team, Team Liquid.<br />  <br />  Fast forwarding another seven days and Faze Clan played another tournament final. This time around it was the IEM Katowice Grand Final, against the Swedes of Fnatic. A team that hadn't won a single title for two years. All five maps were played and guess what? Faze Clan lost yet again.<br />  <br />  <figure><a class="imgWrap" href="/gallery/10818/dreamhack-open-winter-2017/image/60972"><img class="img" src="http://static.fragbite.se/images/10818/t/60972.jpg" alt="Chris "chrisj" de john and his mousesports is the biggest threat to faze clan during v4 future sports festival." /></a><figcaption>Chris "chrisJ" de John and his Mousesports is the biggest threat to Faze Clan during the V4 Future Sports Festival.</figcaption></figure><br />  <h3>What has changed since late last year?</h3> Given their ECS Season 4 win in mid-December last year, many of us thought that Faze Clan was finally on the verge of overcoming their hardship to secure titles. They did win a few others during 2017, but they also ended up losing quite a few tournament finals, giving them a "not quite there yet" stamp. However, winning ECS Season 4, beating Mousesports 2-1 in the Grand Final, didn't set them up for the future in the way that I thought, and falling back into their "not quite there yet" state has proven to put a strain on the team that has been seen arguing during tournaments. It's not a wild guess that the team is under an immense pressure from the organization to start delivering some more titles, proving that they are worth their hefty salaries. Because we have to remember that the five players representing Faze Clan are some of the biggest stars ever of the CS:GO scene. Is the pressure, and the lack of titles so far this year, starting to create cracks in the foundation of the team? Maybe. But now they have a chance to repair those cracks.<br />  <br />  <h3>A win that could change everything</h3> The V4 Future Sports Festival in Budapest, Hungary, isn't exactly a top-tier tournament, even though they have a massive €500,000 prize pool. With Faze Clan and Mousesports being the two teams with the best results in recent history, and Virtus.pro and Hellraisers adding some more profiles to the tournament, the rest of the eight teams really doesn't have much to show for themselves. <br />  <br />  The four higher profiled teams should also be the ones making it to the playoffs, even though you can't be that sure with a struggling Virtus.pro in attendance. However, let's pretend that Faze Clan and Mousesports win their respective groups, with Hellraisers and Virtus.pro finishing as runner-ups, this would mean that the semifinals would be played between Faze Clan and Virtus.pro, as well as Mousesports and Hellraisers. That should mean a tournament final between Faze Clan and Mousesports. We all know that Mousesports can play some really good Counter-Strike, but Faze Clan would still be the favorites going into the game. <br />  <br />  Let's say that they will live up to the expectations this time, securing the title with a 3-1 win in the Grand Final. Now that would be a well-needed confidence boost for the players of Faze Clan, showing them that the ECS Season 4 win wasn't a one time high for them. That would make them really dangerous, going into the important Dreamhack Masters Marseille tournament in mid-April. <br />  <br />  <figure><a class="imgWrap" href="/gallery/10818/dreamhack-open-winter-2017/image/60972"><img class="img" src="https://static.fragbite.se/images/10810/t/60905.jpg" alt="Could a change to the coaching staff, where Robert "robban" dahlström has an important role, come as a result of potential disaster in budapest?" /></a><figcaption>Could a change to the coaching staff, where Robert "RobbaN" Dahlström has an important role, come as a result of a potential disaster in Budapest?</figcaption></figure><br />  <h3>A word of caution</h3> What if Faze Clan were to lose the Grand Final, or even worse, not even making it there? Well, if Faze Clan would fail miserably and not even making it out of the group stage, then it shouldn't surprise anyone if they made some changes to the team. The question is what kind of changes, and when they would be implemented. There are quite a few tournaments coming up while we're closing in on summer, and the time to prepare for the Faceit Major London is steadily decreasing. And one thing is for sure, Faze Clan will be looking for revenge, entering the SSE Arena in Wembley, UK.</div>

RobbaN: "For the first time, we have a real team"

FaZe Clan are on the rise, and in good timing as 2016 is reaching its end with the most competitive qualifier in CS:GO history. We talked to the coach Robert "RobbaN" Dahlström to feel him out regarding FaZe's current form and the task of reaching the Eleague 2017 Major.

Since entering CS:GO, the FaZe Clan organization has had a hard time finding success despite recruiting some of the most talented players in the world. Throughout the year they've experienced more lows than highs, and twice in a year they have felt the falcon chest punch of being eliminated in a Major group stage. However, this means they have also successfully advanced from two Major qualifiers. This bodes well for the current squad, who are in the midst of a skyrocket rise in form and results.

However, this means they have also successfully advanced from two Major qualifiers. This bodes well for the current squad, who are in the midst of a skyrocket rise in form and results. <br />  <br />  In October, the team recruited the Danish in game leader Finn "karrigan" Andersen from Astralis, and the French player Fabien "kioShiMa" Fiey, who had been on the bench for some time, was taken back into the squad the following month. Since then, the team has had some great results, and more importantly a sense of consistency. We caught up with the Swedish CS 1.6 legend Robert "RobbaN" Dahlström, who has been FaZe's coach since February, about the team's boost in form.<br />  <br />  <blockquote>"For the first time, we have a real team. That's the biggest difference. We have five individuals who all want the same thing — to win. We have a good mixture of players, and they all put in the same amount of effort now", the coach explains.</blockquote><br />  <figure><img class="img" src="http://static.fragbite.se/stock/9f321d4de2a5794e169c.jpg" alt="kioShiMa has been more one of FaZe's solutions." /><figcaption>kioShiMa has been one of FaZe's solutions.</figcaption></figure><br />  <br />  After the current squad was set, the results came flying in. The team reached three straight semi finals, two of which were in the top tier tournaments Intel Extreme Masters XI - Oakland and the Eleague Season 2 finals. You might not consider reaching semi finals being <i>fantastic</i>, but keep in mind that prior to these results the franchise had never reached a top four placing in a premier CS:GO tournament. Ever.<br />  <br />  <br />  <aside>"The difference [between winning and losing] is now in the details"</aside><br />  <br />  These results brought FaZe Clan up six placings on the HLTV.org world ranking. They are currently in 8th place, which on paper almost guarantees you a spot in a major, and a possibility of reaching Legend status at that.<br />  <br />  But FaZe Clan were hit with a small setback last weekend. They were eliminated in the group stage at the season finals of Esports Championship Series, ECS. However, they did share groups with both Astralis, who eventually won the tournament, and OpTic, who were defeated in the grand final. With less than a week left to the most important qualifier of the season, was this a kick to FaZe's confidence?<br />  <br />  <blockquote>"No, the loss at ECS hasn't affected our confidence. We have analyzed our losses, and despite losing we feel that we played good in many of the matches. The difference [between winning and losing] is now in the details, unlike before when we had much bigger problems."</blockquote><br />  The phrase <i>"in the details"</i> does have a positive ring to it. In the previous squads, the big picture was too weak for details to really matter. This kind of fine-tuning demands a lot of focus though, something that might waver when you're constantly on the road.<br />  <br />  <figure><img src="http://static.fragbite.se/images/10769/t/57586.jpg" alt="RobbaN coaching FaZe Clan." /><br />  <figcaption>Traveling can be tough, but Dahlström sees silver linings.</figcaption></figure><br />  <br />  This week's qualifier in Atlanta will be FaZe Clan's fifth offline event in six weeks. All of the tournaments have been in the United States, which means both being far away from home as well as taking long trips. On top of that, teams might have a hard time finding time to practice when always either being on the move or playing official tournaments. FaZe's situation doesn't really stand out compared to other top teams' though. It's just the way the scene is right now.<br />  <br />  <blockquote>"The current schedule is tough for a lot of teams, but you just have to make the best of it. We had practice computers at ECS, and as soon as we were eliminated we left and started to practice. Sure, the hectic schedule might affect the players' individual form, not having as much hours as we're used to, but we've practiced as much as possible."</blockquote><br />  As we've covered the team's six week tour, we're brought to the current mark in the 2016 calendar. Tomorrow is the first day of CS:GO's most competitive qualifier to date, the Eleague 2017 Major Qualifier. FaZe Clan is looking to grab one of the eight spots for the million dollar tournament, which is held in Atlanta in January, but it sure won't be a walk in the park.<br />  <br />  <br />  <aside>"We know that we can win against all teams!"</aside><br />  <br />  Eight spots might sound a lot for a 16 team qualifier, as you only have to be a part of the better half to advance. But this week's participation's list is equivalent to that of a premier tournament. To give you a quick rundown, some mentionable opponents are NiP Gaming, Team Dignitas, OpTic, Cloud9, EnVyUs, mousesports, G2 Esports, TyLoo, Immortals and Godsent. Is there reason to be scared? Not really, if you're asking a confident FaZe coach.<br />  <br />  <blockquote>"Sure, there are teams that are better than others in the qualifiers, but we're here to qualify for the major. It doesn't really matter who we play, we know that we can win against all teams!"</blockquote><br />  The Eleague 2017 Major Qualifier takes place in Turner's Eleague Studio in Atlanta, Georgia from Thursday the 15th of December to Sunday the 18th of December. FaZe will be facing the ESL Pro League champions Cloud9 in the first round of the Swiss format tournament, in which you have to win three games in, at most, five rounds to advance to the Major.</div>

During four hours this Sunday, five Swedish CS:GO profiles will play together to help raise money for the Swedish cancer research foundation Cancerfonden. The squad will play different kind of matches and stream their session while raising as much money towards cancer research as possible. As of right now Andreas "znajder "Lindberg, Robert "RobbaN" Dahlmström and Yacine "yzn" Laghmari have confirmed that they will be streaming.

The squad will play different kind of matches and stream their session while raising as much money towards cancer research as possible. Viewers can also support this cause by adding your own donation to the fundraiser that has been started for this event. It was in March this year that KamEKazE was diagnosed with marginal zone lymphoma, a chronic disease that attacks his white blood cells. That started his fight against cancer and because of this he came up with the idea to start this fundraiser. <br />  <div class="rich"><h2>Fact: Cancer and Cancerfonden</h2><b>Cancer is the umbrella term</b> for roughly 200 different kind of diseases. They are also categorized in different name groups. The most common form of cancer in Sweden is prostate-, breast, skin and lung cancer. When cancer emerges in the body the cell foundation becomes disordered. A cancer cell divides itself and that will eventually create a tumor. <br />  <br />  <b>Cancerfonden</b> is a fundraiser organisation that was formed in 1951. Cancerfonden's goal is to defeat cancer and they want more people to survive and less people to be diagnosed with the disease. To reach their goal they are working together with research organisations.</div></div>
